Well, competitive within the set of people looking for the same job.  We don't compete against hardware designers.  I think of an individual being competitive as meaning that person has a roughly equal chance of getting hired, considering only professional qualifications and wage demands.  This is where the ability to sell yourself makes the difference.

If people demand wages above what the employer wants to pay, they can't be competitive unless they can present a really convincing argument about how their work is actually worth the pay increase.  Obviously the greater the difference between the offered rate and the demand, the more wonderful that argument must make the candidate sound.  It seems to me that when an employer is offering $22 an hour with no benefits and the candidate wants $40 an hour, that argument must make the candidate sound really godlike.

Even then, some employers will simply care about nothing but cost.  As long as the candidates meet their basic requirements, they will go with the lowest bid and will pay no attention to any claims of value added.  There really are people that short-sighted in business.  At one time or another we've probably all worked for someone like that.

Writing this made me realize my problem - I'm not godlike enough.  I'm only demigodish.    :-)

Competetive against whom?

There are countless industries that employ tech writers, but they aren't
our competitors. They're our employers. Sure, *they* have competitors,
but their competitors employ us, too. Win-win.

... What do you think keeps "the [tech writing] industry...
competitive,"
in the short- and long-term?
