Exactly right. The only reason that "this discussion comes up frequently" is because, no matter how overwhelming the evidence and impeccable the logic on the other side, the proponents of two spaces refuse to acknowledge that they're wrong, repent, and mend their ways.
Instead, they stand obstinately astride history and declare, "You can have the second space after the period when you pry the spacebar from under my cold dead thumb!"
