My first technical writing assignment was to explain how to make toast. We had to be as detailed as possible. :-) Man I miss the good old days!

I love Daniel's suggestion of instructions for how to clean your room.
One of my first technical writing class assignments way back when was to
write instructions for making balloon animals a project in a speech
class required instructions for how to tie shoe laces, but both of those
instructions would be a bit complicated for a child. I have a few less
complicated suggestions and some that could get too complicated, but
that have simpler options for kids.

* How to care for pet.
* How to schedule homework and playtime.
* How to plan a party, like a birthday party.
* How to organize a desk at an office.
* Emergency instructions for some particular emergency, like:
o what to do if somebody falls and is unconscious.
o what to in a fire.
o what to do in an earthquake.
o how to find the fire extinguishers in the office.
* How to answer the office phone (with the company greeting) and
other phone procedures, like transfer calls, put calls on hold,
and check voicemail.
