Ah, so yes, I see how to get a slide number into the hyperlink: include the
number in the target slide's title. Fair enough, although not exactly what
I was trying to do. What I really would like is something analogous to a
hyperlink in the format "slide-title on slide slide-number", where the
slide-number is *not* part of the target slide's title.

But moving on. When I add the slide number to the target slide's title, it
does indeed update when slides are added/deleted. But, the hyperlink text
still does NOT change. If I could select and press F9 to update it (like
most Word fields, for example), that would be fine. But the only way I can
get the hyperlink text to update is to remove the hyperlink and then
re-insert it -- not a maintainable solution.

So there must be something I'm missing. The slide is in the same PPT deck,
I insert the hyperlinks by choosing Insert > Hyperlink > Place in This
Document > select the slide > OK. There don't seem to be any more options
that I can select.

I'm on Win 7, 64-bit, PPT 2007, with all the Windows & PPT updates applied,
as far as I know.

I plan to try the pptPlex plugin that Mohan Arun suggested, when I have a
bit more time. It looks interesting, but I haven't been able to view any
of the Silverlight videos. Despite the Microsoft website's assurance that
I have the correct version of Silverlight installed (4.0.something),
Silverlight crashes on *all* my browsers (FireFox, Chrome, and IE). I think
I need to run a 32-bit version of a browser. Ironic isn't it that
Microsofts's touted Silverlight doens't work with Microsoft's own OS. Grrr.

But thanks everyone for your help!
