Remember that users don't see the style mess, they only see a PDF or a printed page, don't know what's under the hood. So if it looks decent, take your time with reformatting, whatever approach you choose.

Also, Word supports highlighting multiple selections (with CTRL), so select many paragraphs at once and then apply the style, rather than applying to each paragraph individually or using F4.
