Audacity is written in C++, using the wxWidgets framework. It has many external project dependencies (expat, FLAC, LAME, libmad, libsndfile, Nyquist, OggVorbis, PortAudio, Resample, SoundTouch).
I'm not sure what platform you're using, and what remoting technology (RDP, VNC, SSH, etc). Some remoting techs are platform hacks that apps many not work well with. Audacity builds and behaves differently on Mac, Windows, and Linux. At least for the Unix version, you can run a command line batch version, with specific options, in running it that way helps.
You should be looking in the Windows EventLog for some signs, or the Mac/Linux syslogs. Unfortuantely, it appears that it does not use the wxWidgets logging abilities that much. :-(
If you can build code, you can configure the code to enable/disable many features, that might help for some causes of failure. And along these lines I'd try to disable as many of the plugins as possible when trying for your case, to simplify things.
That remoting tool that someone else pointed out might be an interesting solution, but I've never tried it, so not sure.
