Re the word documentation in a job title: it's my impression that this tends
to lower, not raise, the status of a writer. "Documentation specialists" - I
think - are seen as glorified typists/copyists. But I could be wrong.

Re PhDs - again, in my personal experience, it depends largely on the
subject. Some fields really do seem to require that breadth and depth of
knowledge that you'd expect, and some don't. At least not to me.

Re "back then" - amen. Anything less, and how can you call yourself a
professional?
