Absolutely. For me, the level of interruption provided by IM is virtually non-existent. It doesn't derail my train of thought, and there's no requirement for me to respond right away, even if my client says that I'm "available." A phone call is an interruption, as is walking over to talk to me. IM says "hey, I need to talk to you when you have a minute." Likewise, it lets me ping someone to say "hey, I have a question."

It's also indispensable when testing software or troubleshooting a problem. We use it during our service incidents as a primary means of communication between all parties. E-mail has a tremendous delay when sending information back and forth, whereas for me, the instant nature of IM is practically as good as sitting in the same room.

Is everybody really that okay with being bothered by IM all the time? If
it's that urgent, they can walk over to my desk, or PHONE me.
