I meant that in Metro DC, the 1/1000 rule of thumb seems to work, i.e. a
FTE whom an employer would hire for $75,000/year can reasonably expect to
get $75/hour as an independent contractor. It sounds like the ratio in CA
is much higher, i.e. worse for the contractors.

So different from where? Mark said his company is paying $55-80, which is
not wildly different from here. I think some very technical API
specialists might be able to get $75 on a 1099 basis, but then salaries
for those jobs are higher as well, more like $120-130K.
