[We are drifting from Q&As on certification, to which I can respond as head of the Certification Commission, to opinions on certification and writing, to which which I chime in as an individual. So I'll take off my commissioner hat (which is shiny and has a medallion on it 8^), change my signature block, and comment personally — Steve]

Not underground, Bill, but there's a thriving market for third-party technical documentation, including whole series of titles ("… For Dummies," "The Missing Manual," "Classroom in a Box"). I consider this a direct reflection of shortcomings in technical documentation written for hire.

But my original comment has been misconstrued. I was not comparing technical communication with medicine; I was saying that you can always find lousy individuals, but in the real world people seek out accredited professionals rather than avoid them.
