So far the discussion has jumped from STC certification to ethics of a trade or profession. But before you get to far in, remember what ethics are.

1.. A set of principles of right conduct.
2.. A theory or a system of moral values: "An ethic of service is at war with a craving for gain" (Gregg Easterbrook).
2.. ethics(used with a sing. verb) The study of the general nature of morals and of the specific moral choices to be made by a person; moral philosophy.
3.. ethics(used with a sing. or pl. verb) The rules or standards governing the conduct of a person or the members of a profession: medical ethics.
As a person on a different forum brought up one time, having ethics is really meaningless unless you know how they defined their ethics. Motorcycle gangs are ethical. Maybe more than a lot of businesses. Their ethics don't match yours, or maybe they do, but they do have a standard set of rules of what they consider right, and they are followed religiously. Those who do not are removed quickly.

However, I doubt any of you would want the president of Hell's Angels being the leader of your group.

So the fact that a guild or trade union or association has ethics means very little. Radical terrorists most in the news the last 10 years follow ethics but I doubt you agree with their ethics, either.
