Go to File > Properties. On the description tab, the Application field shows the source, e.g., "Acrobat PDFMaker 9.1 for Word" or "FrameMaker 7.2." For more detailed metadata, click Additional Metadata, on the left select Advanced, and expand the PDF Properties entry. Unless someone scrubbed it, you'll see the author, creation date, etc.
