So far as FrameMaker or any new program, it's important to break down
learning into 1. Things the program can do; 2. Things you want the
program to do; 3. How to go about #2. (4. A way to remember #1 even if
you don't use them right away)

For me, knowing about the use of styles, conditional text, things that
FM has in common with Word (and probably a lot of other programs) was
a huge help in learning FM. I learned these from using Word.

Stumbling blocks will primarily depend on what you need to do with the
program: simple editing or writing; advanced multi-chapter books with
lots of conditions; are you interfacing with other programs; etc. The
devil's in the details. These programs and the things they can do are
complex, and they don't necessarily do them the same way, so that can
be a stumbling block (transferring knowledge and interfacing).

Also, learning a few bits and then trying something more advanced and
finding out that you've set things up wrong, so need to redo it.

If you're going to be learning FM and/or DITA, I strongly recommend
getting at least one book. Always a good reference; it's easy to
forget things if you don't use them all the time.

Don't know anything about DITA.

Regards,

Kathleen
