And no, I don't blindly suggest that lower word count equals greater clarity, although in this discussion that may prove (too late to do any good) to be the case.

If you use bigger words, then you need fewer of them while the number of characters may remain the same, but then your audience shrinks because not everyone knows big words, so there are fewer characters reading your document. Documents should be measured with character count.
