I haven't seen a conversion into INDD yet that went smoothly. My preference is to make a template for the new doc, then copy/paste content from the old doc where it is slowing correctly into the new doc.

Of course, if the old doc is in a format you no longer have the original app to open it with, that isn't going to work.
