Here's another areClick the Office button (top left), and then click Word Options. In the Word Options dialog, click Advanced and then scroll all the way to the bottom. You'll see "Compatibility options for," followed by a drop-down that lets you select either the current doc or "All New Documents." Below that, there are two items:
-- You can set "Lay out this document as if created in" to any of a long list of choices. Compare that setting in the problem docs and the non-problem docs.
-- Expand "Layout Options" to see a long list of options. Compare the settings in the problem docs and the non-problem docs, especially for anything that sounds spacing-related.
