Swollen batteries are a common cause of trackpad malfunctions on older
MBPs.

You can test for this easy enough. Take out the battery, fit the cover
back on loosely (I..e, don't put the screws in) plug in the adapter, turn
on the machine and try the trackpad (you don't need the battery to run
it). If all is OK, you know the problem is a swollen battery.

Warnings:
*Don't run your machine without the battery for anything other than brief
testing.
*Be careful taking out the battery. Ideally, you need a special tri-tipped
screwdriver, but you can do it with a tiny electricians flat head if
you're careful (do not apply force or you'll round the head and never get
it out)
*None of the above applies to the new Retina machines or Macbook Airs.
