I still have my 1995 Toshiba Satellite with its dead battery, which I can only use on AC power. I'd be happy to try Mike's experiment, if someone will send me a new battery for it.

Subject: RE: [TOOLS] laptops and batteries
A long LONG time ago (1995/6?) I had a Toshiba laptop (my first laptop ever), and you could do a live battery swap in it but you had to have the new battery in place within 30 seconds. Of course, that laptop probably weighed 10 pounds in those days.
I don't know if they used capacitors on the motherboard to hold a short term charge or what, but that was a lifesaver of a feature that I have never seen again on any laptop.
