Rick,

You absolutely have to get into the scrums, especially as lone writer! Otherwise you won't hear those discussions that lead to doc changes, because the devs and managers don't always realize what changes affect docs. You're always listening for those items. You may not be able to make every scrum for every team (though that's ideal), but sometimes just being in the room reminds everyone that new stuff needs to be documented.

You also need to be involved in design reviews, for the same reasons. Here's where you can impact usability, as well as being ahead of the game in knowing what is supposed to happen when the user clicks X.

Many here can help you make that case, if you need more arguments.
