You can also use Google Advanced Search to search a forum, no matter what
the default forum search engine is. Just enter the forum URL in the "Site
or domain" field in the Google Advanced Search screen.

I do that all the time when I'm searching the MadCap forums and it works
quite nicely.

It works on http://www.techwr-l.com/archives/ too. Although because of how
the forum is structured, pretty much all you see is the message header,
without much of a clue about the actual content of the post.
