I am a newbie to the field altogether, having transitioned from working in
clinical ophthalmology to training eye care providers in the use of
electronic health records software and finding that there was a great lack
in its documentation; I lobbied for a documentation position of some sort
since I'm technical and I love to write. Obviously, I sold the company on
it and have been given the title of "Technical Writer."

I am good with the title but I do find that I do a whole lot more than
write. I edit. I design. I market. I troubleshoot. I test. I intercede. I
referee. I interview. It seems that "Technical Writer" short changes what I
do and it is a mere drop in the bucket. It seems my company agrees, I've
earned a $4000 pay increase in less than 30 days after transition from
trainer to writer.

We also have a "Documentation Specialist" but I'm not sure what his duties
are compared to mine.
