When I read your request, it reminded me of this document, which discussed "minimalism": http://www.infomanagementcenter.com/Resources/eNews2012-12JHackos.pdf

To be honest, I don't even remember how I came to have it bookmarked!

I don't have any suggestions for particular books or media, but searching for minimalism and scenario-based or solutions-oriented information (two concepts mentioned in the article) may lead you to something useful.
