This is the first year I've joined STC, and I pay for my own membership. I, too, hesitated because of the cost. I can say without a doubt
it's been worth it. I contacted my chapter and asked if anyone could mentor me in API/SDK documentation, an area I'd like to move
in to. STC (specifically, a wonderful woman named Deb Lockwood) connected me to a woman with
vast experience who has already been a tremendous help. I could go on, but that's just one instance of how STC has been helpful.

That said, I think a lot will depend on your chapter, how active it is, and how dedicated the committee members are. While it looked
like not much was going on with my chapter, I joined anyway, mostly because I wanted to have access to the on-line magazine
Intercom that focused on API documentation. I've been so impressed with the people I've connected with that I
want to volunteer to make the chapter even stronger. And I haven't even been to a meeting yet!

Regards,
Susan

My company pays for my membership - they pay for all the writers via a corporate membership.

I have been a dues-paying member when I have been employed as a writer ...
um, content developer ... um, communicator over the last 25 years. It's not THAT much money, and it is tax deductible, and there are benefits to me more than the company. But the company gets something out of it too.

My 2Â,

JG
