I've never made a degree a requirement in the hiring of a tech writer, and over the years have made new tech writers out of lab and field service techs who only had OTJ experience in their fields and even an administrative assistant (the average engineering dept admin does a much better job of dealing with recalcitrant engineers than most tech writers, btw).
