First of all, there are plenty of western consumers who haven't felt the need to become familiar with or even bother to use social media and touchscreens. And even fewer who actually derive a living from either.

There are probably no technological changes that impact ALL members of any profession. If we looked hard enough, we could probably find someone, somewhere, who is still banging out manuscripts on an IBM Selectric - or using a #2 pencil and a wire bound notepad - and sending them off to someone else to be edited, illustrated and typeset.

So the need for working knowledge of single sourcing and DITA, despite their spread, have probably not yet been a critical threat to a tech writer's ability to find employment. But if you're not up to speed on them, you're probably already being impacted.

What technological changes have occurred in the last decade that all tech writers had to keep up with? Do they go beyond the changes that all Western consumers are familiar with (social media, ubiquitous touchscreens, etc.)?

If you are able to keep up with changes in tech, probably.

And that IS aggressively gambling.
