Would it be a problem for you if, instead of shoving something into the Word doc, you linked to it? Assuming that is even possible, of course.

Save Project file as a PDF, then Insert the PDF object

Or since your original plan was to use an icon anyway, place a nice image in your Word doc. Select the image, then choose Insert > Hyperlink and create a link to the Project file. Be sure to include the Project file in distribution.
