I've done a lot of contracting through third parties in which I was a W2
employee through a consulting firm. In some cases, the client expected me
to be mostly off-site, with occasional on-site meetings. In many cases I
work three to four days a week on-site and one or two days a week off-site.
In my opinion, any problems that I had with communication were not related
to whether I was working on-site or off-site.

That said, I have found that having some in-person meetings at the
beginning of a project is often extremely valuable. I don't think that any
of our current technologies can fully replace the value of in-person
meetings in establishing good communications. That doesn't mean that it's
impossible to establish good communications if you never meet people in
person, but without the in-person experience, sometimes it can take longer
to get into the "groove."
