I've gotten out-of-touch with the tech writing and user experience
literature over the past couple of years, but I keep getting notices about
people who are doing research in the field or having conferences on them.

I recently received a note from the Neilsen Norman Group, that does
user-related research (they say "Evidence-Based User Experience Research,
Training, and Consulting"). Their web address is nngroup

They might offer some leads.

I'd be interested in what you find out.
