A USB display adapter will add an actual second display adapter to your computer and drive the second monitor. It's like adding a second display card to a desktop system.

Yeah, it looks like a dead-end for my aging ASUS laptop with its USB 2.0
ports.

I did find a TrippLite unit that plugs into a DisplayPort and offers all
that I want. And I've found a powered HMDI-to-DisplayPort adapter offered
by another vendor. But TripplIte doesn't think the laptop will be able to
provide enough signal strength to its image-splitting gizmo.

I did buy an Intel NUC at the same time as the second 24" screen, but have
been procrastinating in loading Widows 10 on it and deploying it. Save for
buying a new laptop, moving forward with the NUC looks like the best way to
go.

Unless your laptop actually has multiple display outputs (hardly any do),
what you'll need is a USB display adapter. If your laptop supports USB 3.0,
be sure to get that and not a 2.0 adapter. You want the fastest one your
laptop will support.

My Windows 8.1 laptop has an HDMI video output. To it I've attached a 24"

I have a second 24" DisplayPort monitor I'd also like to use, being able
to
display a different image on it than what is on the other two screens..

Is this feasible? What hardware is required?
