For FrameMaker-authored docs, I've always used Rick Quatro's
PageLabeler/PageLabelerES tool. (See

[2]http://www.frameexpert.com/store/PageLabeler.pdf.) Makes it a
breeze. And for Word-authored docs, I used custom action scripts within
the PDF to easily get the page numbers to match (among other
post-production processing I did, such as adding metadata, which is why
I used a script instead of just the command for fixing the page
numbers).
So production process isn't an issue either way when deciding on
whether to use recto/verso and/or separate page number sequences for
frontmatter vs. regular content.

matter, then starting over at page 1 for the first chapter means I have to
subtract that odd variable to arrive at the "actual" page number. Ludicrous.
