Hi,there is a special story about punctuation marks. It changed a lot, and whether you should use a colon might be a style decision.
You should have or create a style manual to make the usage consistent in your document. I would usually also prefer a colont in front of a picture but it might depend on context. The colon shows that the sentence is connected to the picture. If it is not connected and the picture belongs to a new part, there should be a period.
In some context also a comma night be correct.
I would prepare an internal style guide and describe the main parts including formatting.This helps a lot.

Just going by the text in your example then I think a period is appropriate, however if the step introduces the image in some way ("...as shown below") then I think a colon would make sense.
