The first contender for why this is bad advice comes from the ever controversial serial comma. Journalism style guides say to omit the serial comma. Technical writers disagree about whether to use a serial comma. Businesses have been sued for multiple millions of dollars and pounds for not using a serial comma.
I failed to complete my thought but perhaps the allusion to a thought about the serial comma is best given that the discussions about it are a general nuisance.
