Interestingly, though, I have occasionally fallen into the
company of a scientist or engineer -- or even a whole
underground cell of them -- who understood and cherished the
language and, by extension, my function. (Having a sort of
ragtag techie background in physics and electronics doesn't
hurt, nor, I suspect, does being male.)

This makes for an excellent, supportive work environment. The
dark cloud around this silver lining is the way they identify
and savor my every mistake, especially the higher-level mistakes
like word misuse or a jawbreaking sentence.
