One solution for printed manuals is to put the expected user input
on a separate line, possibly in a different font as well: something like
>this is what you should type
and then go on with the text. That, plus a brief explanation at the
beginning of your conventions, will also avoid the calls from people
who duly typed exactly what you gave them, including the quote marks.
