November Meeting of the Northern New England STC:

Techniques for Minimalist Documentation and User Interface Design
Dr. John M. Carroll

The distinctive skills that make people good problem solvers
(analogical reasoning) also make them poor candidates for systematic
instruction. The minimalist approach seeks to capitalize on precisely
the phenomena that undermine the phenomena that undermine systematic
instruction. The minimalist approach:
* Allows users to get started immediately
* Relies on users to reason, to improvise creatively, and to
take advantage of what they already know
* Supports error recognition and recovery

This talk briefly discusses a variey of examples from Dr. Carroll's
work to illustrate the minimalist approach.

Dr. Carroll is Manager of Design Concepts and Education
at the IBM Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York.
His research is in the analysis of human learning, problem-solving,
and language, particularly in situations involving the use of
computers. His most recent books are
* The Nurnberg Funnel: Designing minimalist instruction for
practical computer skill (MIT Press, 1990)
* Designing Interaction: Psychology at the Human-Computer
Interface (Cambridge University Press, 1991).
