CD-ROM capacity

Subject: CD-ROM capacity

I hope this is a simple question:

How much data (in bytes) can a CD-ROM hold?

I'm new to this, so please excuse my ignorance. If the answer is
"it depends," please let me know the details. Is data compression
a factor? Are there different capacities available (as in high/low
density diskettes)?

TIA....

Charles
