Kimberley,

My university also doesn't require any prerequisites between the
400 level writing course in the general science department and the 100
level writing courses all students take. I looked it up. I suspect that
your university works similarly: "Well, if they took English 100 three
years ago, they must know how to write for scientific journals!"
I don't believe this is a good system, but it's the attitude around
here. Various departments at this school are shocked that the only people
who really have even decent writing skills are in the English department.
Of course, the English department is the only one that requires its
students to write on a regular basis.
So the other departments call the tutoring supervisor and request
an English tutor just for their students or little mini-lectures on how to
write a research paper. We've been adopted by the Botany department for
just this reason--over half our clients come from the science building.
The scariest part is that they are normally seniors or graduate students.
I've been pushing for a long time now for a new system, but nobody
really wants to implement it.

Chantel
