The verb 'abort' is derived from the Latin 'aboriri' meaning to
disappear or miscarry. It seems more likely to me that 'ion' was
affixed to 'abort' rather than the other way around.

abort (there was not verb until the noun "abortion" came along--
now the verb is used for lots of situations
including aborting procedures in computer programs)
