I see this as an etiquette issue, not a legal issue. (Legally, the
writer copyrights what the writer initiates, and quotes with
attribution and permission. The writer can also copyright illegally,
and few individuals will use the time and money to pursue legal
recompense.)

I don't think you should quote anyone publicly unless you have their
permission; I think whether you attribute the quote is up to the
originator; e.g., it is polite to name the source, but the source may
not want to be named.

Bob Lord has asked a good question. I'm not qualified to answer
it, but I hope we have some legal types out there who are savvy
in copyright law to provide some firm answers. True, part of
this is simple netiquette, but it could have legal ramifications
also. Post replies to the list, please.

Folks,

I have a question on TECHWR-L etiquette: I recently posted a question on
online
hardware documentation, and received lots of valuable responses. Many were
emailed directly to me. I've had a request from an STC chapter to allow them
to
publish the thread. I've given them permission to publish my thoughts, but
wondered about all the responses I received.

Normal netiquette is not to forward messages you receive in email unless you
have the permission of the originator. On TECHWR-L, I frequently see posts
consisting of compilations of responses to other posts. Some questions:

o Are posted responses considered fair game for
compilation/redistribution without permission of the originator?

o Are responses sent directly to a poster (that is, not via the
list) also considered fair game?

o What about subsequent publication in a document or another list?
Is permission required for use of responses to posts in another
forum or in print?

I'll look forward to your advice. (I'm a digest subscriber, so my responses
may
be delayed.)

Bob
