Don't they know that the learning curve for a different
but comparable tool (Word vs. WordPerf, PM vs. Framemaker,
PC vs. Mac, etc.) is usually just a week or two?

An analogy: "Skilled carpenter wanted. Some woodworking
experience preferred, but must use Black & Decker model
9312 hammer." <<

I have to disagree here.
I would be *very* impressed if any PageMaker guru learned
Frame in a week or two. In fact, send me your resume.

And I don't think your analogy is analogous.
If I can drive a Nissan Pathfinder, and I am an excellent
driver, that does not qualify me to drive a Kenworth for
a trucking company.
(But really, I have a clean driving record, can stay up
for hours on end, and read maps.)

In many companies, the tech writer is the desktop publisher
as well as the illustrator. In other words, they are
technical communicators. In my company, tech communicators
are also responsible for programming our CD ROM document
applications.

I am assuming that the position requires writing and
organizational skills as prerequisites and is not trying
to squeeze a tech writer out of a desktop publisher.

Just my humble opinion.
