Another country heard from here.... COBOL was developed when there were
only mainframes. My shop is a mainframe shop, with some 7,000 COBOL programs
in use. My personal opinion, not connected with my agenciy's, is that I do
not agree with Paige Vinall, who wrote, in part: I admit that it is not yet
in wide use on workstations or PCs, but I think that will change over time
as the mainframe community moves forward." As systems downsize to smaller
platforms, I believe COBOL will go the way of the 5-cent newspaper, being
replaced by newer, more powerful languages.
