Apple Computer is trying to persuade IBM to adopt its Mac operating
system in an effort to maintain market share in the face of
Microsoft's growing dominance. "It would make a very, very powerful
alternative if IBM chose the Mac operating system. We've had
discussions along those lines," says Apple chairman A.C. Markkula, Jr.
IBM has spent approximately $2 billion pushing its own OS/2 operating
system without much success, and analysts now are saying that the only
way the two companies can present a viable alternative to Microsoft
Windows is by joining forces and putting their full marketing strength
behind the growing number of Mac clones. "Operating systems is
fighting the last war," said IBM's Lou Gerstner in a speech last July.
"It's too late to catch up to the desktop. Now the action is on how
you tie it all together." (Wall Street Journal 25 Sep 95 A3)
