The Economist, which publishes on both sides of the Atlantic, uses the small
US billion and claims it is making inroads in the UK. I don't know what
evidence it has for that assertion, but I feel confident that the transition
isn't complete.

My reaction is to avoid billion, trillion, &c. Often the metric prefixes can
be used, but there are other work-arounds.
