TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Livingston Enterprises, Inc. has 2 openings in its Tech Pubs dept -- we
need an experienced technical writer, and an experienced technical trainer.
TECH WRITER POSITION:
The writer will create and edit documentation for network routers and
communication servers. Printed documentation is created in Frame (UNIX and
Mac); we're currently hashing out which tool to use for html conversion.
We're creating a tech pubs dept. -- currently there's only one other
writer. Contract writers are hired as needed. The small dept. size means no
micromanagement -- it also means that you'll need to be very independent.
Simple graphics are created in-house; illustrations that require artistic
prowess are outsourced.
The ideal candidate will have experience with Frame and graphics packages,
an assertive personality, and the ability to pick up what they don't
already know from books and engineers.
TECH TRAINER POSITION:
The technical trainer will be creating a training program from scratch. The
position entails designing the curriculum, creating the training materials,
and doing the presentations. You'll be teaching a class how to install and
maintain routers and communication servers. The audience varies --
primarily system administrators will be enrolled, but some end users will
inevitably pop up in class.
The training program will be tightly coupled with the tech pubs dept. As
the program grows, additional trainers may be hired.
The ideal candidate will have training and/or tech writing experience, the
ability to adjust the level of information to suit the audience, the
ability to field technical questions on the fly, and strong organizational
