I've found Freehand (from Macromedia) to meet all of my needs. From
quick line art to detailed blow-out techncial illustrations, in
color, half-tone, and line art. Export as an eps and imports cleanly
into WordPerfect, Word, and PageMaker.

It's not cheap, but they offer a competitive upgrade from
Illustrator, Canvas and some others for about $100.
