Position:
Assistant Professor, Non-regular appointment or Instructor, Non-
regular appointment

This position provides an exciting opportunity for a motivated,
creative individual to work at the frontiers in the design,
creation, and development of a highly innovative program in
distance education. The person in this position will provide
leadership for distance education between the Department of
Rhetoric at the UM, Twin Cities campus and the UM, Crookston
campus. The UM Crookston campus offers baccalaureate and
associate programs that are employment oriented and outcome-
based. All full-time students are issued notebook computers to
be used in and out of class with the goal of becoming self-
directed learners. The campus provides a University link to the
region for technology transfer and outreach. Responsibilities
will include teaching in the Scientific and Technical
Communication program at both the Twin Cities and Crookston
campuses using distance delivery technologies, coordinating
departmental and collegiate curricular efforts in Crookston,
assisting faculty in developing distant delivery courses; and
working with the Minnesota Extension Service in providing staff
development opportunities to Extension employees on-site. This
position is administratively responsible to the Head of the
Department of Rhetoric. The Department of Rhetoric will provide
an office and technical support for this position. Travel to
the UM Crookston campus will be required (approximately twice
per quarter) and compensated.

Appointment, Rank, and Salary:
Nine-month appointment as non-regular Instructor (9404) or non-
regular Assistant Professor (9403), renewable annually for three
years. Academic appointment in the Department of Rhetoric,
College of Agricultural, Food, and Environmental Sciences
(COAFES); annual reappointment is subject to successful
performance. Salary is competitive. University retirement
(after a waiting period), health and insurance benefit programs
apply. The position is available September 16, 1996. This
position will end after three years. The successful candidate
will have the option to apply for any suitable open positions
at that time.

Responsibilities:
Coordinate departmental curricular efforts in Crookston leading
to site-licensing of appropriate academic degrees and
certificates to UMC; teach three courses a year in the
Scientific and Technical Communication program (e.g., document
design, grant proposal writing, and editing courses); assist
faculty in developing distant delivery courses that use a
variety of technologies (e.g., listservs, MOOs, WWW sites, and
Interactive TV); establish registration, financial, legal, and
administrative policies and procedures for the distribution of
credit and non-credit fee-based education; work with College
departments and MN Extension Service to establish the
technological infrastructure needed to engage in outreach
activities in the immediate and near future; and explore
extending COAFES/Crookston linkages to UM, Duluth, UND, USD,
Tribal Colleges and 1994 Tribal Land Grants.

Qualifications:
MA/MS considered (ABD preferred) for instructor; Ph.D. required
for appointment as Assistant Professor. Degree in Scientific
and Technical Communication, Vocational Technology, Curriculum
and Instruction, Communication or related field required. The
successful candidate will have strengths in scientific and
technical communication, communication technologies, curriculum
design, distance delivery, and program assessment. Evidence of
successful teaching required. Desired qualifications include
experience with instructional computing that promotes active
learning; online courses or course components; grant writing;
and administration.
