Folks, for those other obsessive-compulsives (like myself), the reference
for the seminal study is:

Miller, G.A. The magical number seven, plus or minus two: Some limits on our
capacity for processing information. Psychological Review, 1956, 63, 81-97.

Roberta Klatzky's Human Memory, Structures and Processes (1975 publication,
W.H. Freeman and Company, ISBN 0-7176-1113-3) discusses this extensively.
