I simply cannot believe that anyone might stop reading an article simply
because of a single word that might be unappropriate. May be that I did not
grasp fully what it meant as I am no native speaker.

But the most important message I take from such a word in this list simply is:
The author was helpless, unable to express himself. For a native speaker this
would be an extremely bad sign. But being offended? Certainly not.

But there are cultural differences even between the US and Europe.
