JoAnn T. Hackos will present a day-long seminar entitled "Downsizing
Documentation by Creating Minimalist Manuals" on Thursday, January 30,
1997, from 8:00 am till 4:30 PM at the Sheraton Columbia Hotel. Cost is $75
for STC members and $95 for nonmembers; the fee covers course materials,
breakfast, lunch, and afternoon break. The Sheraton is located at I-20 and
Bush River Road (one exit west of the intersection of I-20 and I-26) in
Columbia, SC.

The minimalist approach to documentation was first described by John M.
Carroll, then of IBM's Watson Research Center and now department head of
the Computer Science Department at Virginia Tech, as a way to reduce the
amount of time users spend reading manuals and encourage them to explore
and learn by doing. Although originally proposed as a technique for
computer documentation, minimalist principles can be applied to many other
forms of technical communication, including most product manuals,
procedures, and training materials. And it is as applicable to online
documentation as to paper manuals, as its recent adoption by Microsoft in
the Help for its products indicates.

JoAnn Hackos is an internationally acclaimed writer and speaker on
technical communication and management topics. She is CEO of Comtech
Services, an information/design firm based in Denver and San Jose, CA,
which she founded in 1978. An associate fellow of STC, JoAnn was president
of the Society in 1992-93. Her book _Managing Your Documentation Projects_
(John Wiley & Sons, 1994) has received high praise for its sensible,
effective, and measurable approach to technical publication project
management.
