Everywhere I hear the same story: "What is your salary
requirement?" It's almost like answering a riddle to the Sphinx; you
know that the wrong answer will be the death of your candidacy.

I always respond by asking, "Well, what's the job worth to YOU. I
imagine YOU have the best idea of the value of this position to your
company." That puts the bee on their back. At the same time I
emphasize that I can do the best possible job for them, etc. This has
proven to be a good tactic and generally has positive results. In cases
where it becomes evident that they just want to hire at the lowest
possible rate, I don't want to work there anyway, because they're not
interested in quality.
